Step 1

Coming soon. The Android download and the app store listings open shortly. Email hello@mellowmoor.com and we will tell you the day it is ready.

Download for Android

The download is large, so use Wi-Fi. Free to download; the 14-day trial starts when you choose a plan in the app.

Is it safe?

This is the same Mellowmoor app as in the stores, published by Benjamin Jacob McGill, trading as Mellowmoor, and signed with our own developer key. Android checks that signature, and only lets an update install over it if the update carries the same signature.

  • Download it only from this page. We never send the app by email or message.
  • If Google Play Protect offers to scan the app, let it. Please don't switch Play Protect off.
  • When an update is ready, the parents' area says so and opens this page, so you download it the same way.

Check the file (optional)

To be sure the file is exactly the one we published, compare its SHA-256 checksum with this one:

published with the first release

On a computer: certutil -hashfile mellowmoor.apk SHA256 (Windows) or shasum -a 256 mellowmoor.apk (Mac). Many Android file managers can show it too.

Allow installs from this source (once)

Android asks you to give your browser permission to install apps the first time. The words differ a little between tablets; here is what to tap.

1. When it has downloaded, tap Open.
2. If Android says it can't install unknown apps, tap Settings and switch on Allow from this source. Then go back.
3. Tap Install, then Open.
Samsung Galaxy Tab
  1. Tap Download for Android above in Samsung Internet or Chrome. When it finishes, tap Open (or open My Files > Downloads and tap the Mellowmoor file).
  2. If you see "For your security, your tablet is not allowed to install unknown apps from this source", tap Settings.
  3. Switch on Allow from this source (or Allow permission), then tap back.
  4. Tap Install. If Auto Blocker is switched on (Settings > Security and privacy), Samsung blocks apps from outside its stores: switch it off to install, then switch it on again afterwards.
Google Pixel Tablet and most other Android tablets
  1. Tap Download for Android above in Chrome. When it finishes, tap Open (or find it in Files > Downloads).
  2. If you see "Chrome isn't allowed to install unknown apps", tap Settings.
  3. Switch on Allow from this source, then tap back.
  4. Tap Install. If Google Play Protect offers to scan the app, tap Scan app and follow what it says.

On other makes (Lenovo, Xiaomi, Nokia and others) the steps are the same; the setting may be called "Install unknown apps" under Settings > Apps > Special app access.

Amazon Fire tablet
  1. Open this page in the Silk Browser and tap Download for Android. When it finishes, tap the download (or open the Files app > Downloads).
  2. If the tablet says it can't install apps from this source, tap Settings and switch on Allow from this source for Silk Browser (on older Fire tablets: Settings > Security & Privacy > Apps from Unknown Sources).
  3. Go back and tap Install.

Needs Fire OS 6 or later (Fire tablets from 2017 onwards). We haven't been able to test every Fire model; if something doesn't work, please tell us.

Already have Mellowmoor from Google Play?

Keep using that one. The Google Play version and the version from this website can't update each other, so to switch, uninstall one before installing the other. Sign in with the same Mellowmoor account and your children's profiles and progress come back (details kept only on the device, such as pictures and play details, don't move with you). A subscription bought through Google Play stays with Google Play.

After installing, you can switch Allow from this source off again for your browser. To install an update later, the parents' area opens this page; download the new version here and allow the install again if Android asks. Your children's profiles and progress stay as they are.

Step 2

Open the app, create your account and choose a plan

Everything else happens in the app, in the parents' (or staff) area behind your PIN.

  1. Create your account

Open Mellowmoor, create your account with your email address and confirm it from the email we send. Set your parents' PIN.

  2. Choose your plan

Family, or a plan for your school or centre. The app opens our secure checkout, run by RevenueCat with payment by Stripe.

  3. 14 days free

Enter your card to start the trial. Nothing is charged until the 14 days are over, and you can cancel before then.

  4. Then monthly

US$9.99 a month for a family, plus tax where it applies. A receipt is emailed each month with a link to manage or cancel.

Paying and cancelling

We never see or store your card details: Stripe holds them. You can cancel any time with the link in your receipt email, or on our Manage billing page. If you cancel during the free trial, you aren't charged.

If the subscription ends

Mellowmoor keeps working until the end of the time you've paid for, and for 7 more days after that. Then it stops working on the account's tablets until the subscription is renewed. Your account and progress are kept, and renewing unlocks everything again. More about this.

Prices are in US dollars; the checkout shows the total, including any GST or other local tax, before you confirm. All plans and what's included: pricing.

Setting up many tablets

One organisation account and one subscription cover all your tablets, up to the number of learners in your plan.

  1. Install on each tablet. Open this page on each tablet and follow step 1. To save your internet allowance, you can download the file once and copy it to the tablets by USB cable or memory card. If you manage your tablets with a device management (MDM) system, you can install the file through it.
  2. Create the organisation account on the first tablet and choose your plan size (Small, Medium or Large). Subscribe once, from the staff area.
  3. Sign in with the same organisation account on every other tablet. The subscription follows the account, so there's nothing more to buy. Staff share the organisation's sign-in; separate staff logins aren't available yet.
  4. Set a staff PIN on each tablet. The PIN is kept on the tablet itself and keeps children out of the staff area.
  5. Optional: share play between tablets. If learners move between tablets, the account owner can switch on sharing in the staff area, after confirming that you hold each family's consent. How sharing works.
  6. Keep children in the app. Android's app pinning (in Settings, under Security) stops a child leaving Mellowmoor. Install updates when Mellowmoor offers them.

More than 150 learners, or need to pay by invoice? Email hello@mellowmoor.com and we'll arrange a Larger plan.

What you need

  • Android 7.0 or later (or Fire OS 6 or later).
  • About 300 MB of free space, plus about 60 MB for each extra voice you download for the language games.
  • A tablet is best. Mellowmoor is made for a larger screen and plays in landscape; it also works on Android phones.
  • Internet to download, create your account, subscribe and sync. After that, games, stories and music work offline. Go online now and then so the tablet can confirm the subscription.

App Store and Google Play

Prefer a store? The subscription is then bought and managed through your Apple or Google account, at the same US dollar prices shown in your local currency.

iPad and iPhone: Mellowmoor is available from the App Store for now. A version that runs in the iPad's web browser is coming soon.
